The Hubble Telescope has been in use since 1990. Even before it was used, Western space agencies began working together to develop the successor to the James Webb Space Telescope. More than 30 years have passed since the launch took place today. Read more about the new telescope below.

Many engineers and astronomers have been waiting for this day for years. After many setbacks and delays, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is finally about to be launched into space. NASA Manager Jane Rigby attributes the Navy’s transformation into a new star, “there will always be a time ahead”. The start of JWST will be broadcast live by NASA and ESA, while the opening window will begin at 1:20 pm, as previously reported.

JWST is the result of cooperation between the United States, Canada and Europe, and is set to launch from the Coro Spaceport in French Guiana. After more than 30 years of service, the Hubble Telescope has been replaced and is now the largest and most powerful telescope in space, spanning 1.5 million kilometers. Scientists hope to use 25 square meters of play gel to capture new images of the early universe showing the first galaxies to form after the Big Bang.

JWST was planned from the late 1980s. Since then, due to repeated setbacks and mistakes, growth has been further delayed and costs have increased almost to an immeasurable extent. Instead of being estimated at 500 million euros and starting in 2007, it should take place today, so far the telescope has swallowed over 10 billion euros. The telescope was named in memory of NASA’s controversial second director, James Webb.

The JWST destination is to be brought into orbit by the Ariane Launcher. This takes four weeks. Then the glass must be cooled and opened in more than 130 separate steps, which is estimated to take about seven months. The first images in the infrared range are expected in the summer.
