“Perseverance” (approximately the power of stay in German) ran four meters forward, turned 150 degrees to the left, then ran 2.5 meters behind, leaving the tire tracks in the dust. Two weeks after landing on Mars, the six-wheeled American rover embarked on its first tour. “The rover’s six-wheel drive worked properly. I’m never been happy to see the wheel tracks, I ‘ve seen a lot of them,” said Anees Jarifian, NASA’s in-charge engineer. “We now believe that our impetus system is working and that science can take us wherever it takes us in the next two years.” For the tests, the Mars vehicle will have to cover a distance of about 200 meters.

Weighing about 1,000 kilograms and the size of a small car, the “diligence” features a three-meter-long robotic arm and 19 cameras, two microphones and several sophisticated instruments. The rover touched down on February 18 on a dry lake on Mars after 203 flying days and 472 million kilometers covered by a dangerous maneuver.
The rover will explore this area with a diameter of about 45 km over the next two years. Science wants to study the climate and geography of Mars and look for traces of the planet’s previous microbial life.
