Two-step stabilization is a double-edged sword for many users because it not only enhances security, but in some cases involves logging in as well. However, this effort is almost always minimal and according to the small intermediate it should definitely be worthwhile for each user to protect their own data. But others are also concerned about locking themselves out of their accounts – and those concerns are not justified.
Secure password is one thing, second confirmation is another. Using a smartphone as an extra key is convenient and increases security, but it can also lead to problems. However, very few users are concerned about these issues, and Google may be surprised to prevent users from being logged out of their Google account.
In addition to the password you need to confirm your identity via the smartphone in two steps when logging in to unknown devices, locations or especially key points. There are various methods for this, from SMS to Bramic as an authentication application or as a smartphone hardware security key. Additional equipment is required in all cases – so hopefully it exists.
But what if the smartphone is lost, stolen or broken? Then suddenly you are standing in front of the locked door. Again a small analogy: you secure your apartment door with two separate locks, but you only have one key. Despite the key, you unfortunately have to stay out. It is a good idea to keep a copy of the second key in a safe place.

You need a smartphone to sign in to your Google Account, but you can not use it for a variety of reasons. Whether it’s lost or stolen, it’s defective or currently unusable for any other reason – your data behind the Google Account can no longer be accessed. For those who do not deposit a second cell phone number, probably very few have it, and now there is a big problem. If the smartphone can no longer be used permanently, the problem becomes even greater.
Solution
In this scenario, Google has created emergency codes, now called “backup codes” that represent the duplicate key for your account. These codes are the one-time passwords you entered to confirm after signing in with the password. The codes do not change the password, only the second step. So if you lose your smartphone and forget your password (how is that possible …?), The codes will not help you.
This is how you create backup codes
Emergency codes can be downloaded directly into the confirmation settings in two steps. You will receive a list of 10 codes, each of which is valid only once – similar to the TAN lists used in online banking. If you have used all the codes, you should create a new list. Warning: Creating a new list will automatically disable old codes.
Try creating backup codes
- Open yours Google Account.
- In the navigation panel on the left, click Security.
- Under “Sign in to Google”, click Two step confirmation.
- Under “Backup Codes”, click Set up Or show codes. You can print or download codes.
Two-step verification of backup codes is available and setup should be completed. If “Sign in using my smartphone” is checked, you must select it to enable two-step verification. If you suspect that the replacement codes have been stolen or only some codes remain, select Received new codes Out. Your old backup codes will automatically become inactive.
Sign in with the backup code
- Go to your backup codes.
- Sign in Gmail Or another Google service.
- Enter your username and password.
- When asked for your verification code, click Additional options.
- Choose Enter one of the eight digit backup codes Out.
- Enter the backup code.
Node: Since each code can only be used once, it is a good idea to refer to codes that have already been used.
You must create and download these codes before you encounter the problem described above. Once you are locked up, it is too late. Again an analogy for a better understanding: if the second key is in the apartment, it will not be of much use to you outside the door. I do not understand why Google did not notify users of two-step verification of this issue and the possibility of creating backup codes.
Since Google will soon enable the whole thing by default, every user should request a list of such backup codes and save them in a safe place. At best, print it (do not leave it open), because you never know which digital device will be lost. You should now know that you can not expect any help from Google if you lose access to your account.
