We are in a familiar place here as the design of Huawei has changed a bit recently. It is similar to Apple’s MacBook and has build quality. The aesthetics are refined in any way, the edges of the aluminum frame are adorned with metallic bevel and ultra-thin frame screen.

The keyboard is very nice to use and the extra large touchpad is very fluid, although it sinks a little too much under pressure, especially on the front. The keyboard backlight can be adjusted to 3 levels and the on / off button on the top right of the PC has a fingerprint reader, but unfortunately the Windows Hello webcam does not open the screen quickly.

The keyboard is nice to use.

The keyboard is nice to use.

The explanation for this lack is very simple: if Huawei dropped its undesirable webcam on the keyboard in its last releases, it is here … so to bring it out and use it, you have to press the appropriate button; Too bad for video calls in the view of the nose and cheek. He passes at 720p, the effect of which is not very promising, and even worse in low light.

The webcam is placed on the keyboard.

With two USB-C 3.2 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port and a mini-jack on the left and two USB-A 3.2 ports on the right, the connection is well-supplied at the edges anyway; While the SD card reader is welcome, it is enough to satisfy most applications.

To access the components, remove the 10 torque screws under the chassis. Unfortunately the welded RAM, however, is protected and replaceable under a metal cover, removable M.2 SSD. The battery is easily replaced by removing the Phillips screws.

    SSD removable, but no RAM.

In terms of ventilation, the PC was quiet in many situations, even though greedy software like Blender increased the noise to 37.8 dB, which is still audible, but far from the models. Sports It can easily exceed 40 dB. On the other hand, there is heating. We mentioned a maximum of 43 degrees Celsius at the air outlet and 36.5 degrees Celsius at the center of the keyboard, which is very low.

    PC is cool.

As we mentioned above, our test model is equipped with AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. Unfortunately Huawei’s schedule is a little earlier than using the Ryzen 6000s, but the 5800H is one of the best consumer models, so so is its performance.

    Matebook 16 against its competitors.

    Matebook 16 against its competitors.

It scored 124 on our performance test; Higher score than Intel’s 11th General CPUs, but below the larger Core i9-12900H it is only found in chunky configurations. Sports. Huawei also promotes “performance” mode, which is activated by simultaneously pressing “Fn + P”. We have already tested on other models without noticing any particular interest and again, we did not notice any difference during our video processing and 3D rendering tests.

In the game, the integrated GPU component of the processor (Vega generation – 512 computing units at 2 GHz) performs better than we could have played. Overwatch Graphics “low” at 64 fps and Diablo III “On the rise” at 30 fps; Enough to enjoy some old or unnecessary titles.

The MateBook 16 fits easily with a standard bag (35 x 25.5 x 1.8 cm), but is logically heavier (2 kg) than ultraportables. The 135 W charger definitely needs to be added fast, but weighs 480 grams. Unlike Huawei it does not offer its usual Black Charger design, it is plugged directly into the mains, but is a “classic” block located halfway between the USB-C cable and the power cable. Although not included in the PC, the latter can be disconnected from the block by a foreign main cable (especially US or UK) if required. This system, modeled after the Apple MacBook, makes it possible to connect a mains plug rather than a mains cable. However, this accessory is not yet part of Huawei’s list.

If necessary, the main plug can be replaced.
    PC loader.

Question autonomy, the computer works best for a 16-inch screen. During our video playback test on Netflix it lasted 8 hours and 19 minutes, the brightness was set to 200 cd / m², the headphones were plugged in at 50% volume and Bluetooth was disabled. It’s not at the level of the best ultraportables, but it does keep you out of the socket for a while.

    Strong points

    • Excellent performance.

    • Large screen and thin bezels in 3: 2 format.

    • Well-measured slab.

    • Connectors are provided.

    • Slightly warms up.

    Weak points

    • The webcam is located on the keyboard.

    • Very glossy layer for reflections.

    • Medium touchpad.

    Conclusion

    We tested what we wanted

    How does standardization work?

Huawei’s MateBook 16 is the best 16-inch PC powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800H. Its screen has well-measured very thin borders in 3: 2 format, but we apologize for the very glossy panel that causes too many reflections. If the connection is terminated, we hope that in the future a webcam will not be found here on the keyboard, which will be an obvious barrier to use in video conferencing. The Notebook 16 is still the best laptop overall.
