Facebook has introduced a cloud-gaming service that allows you to “stream” video games over the Internet.
This means you do not have to download games to play them – and a phone allows you to enjoy more stunning graphics than you normally can handle.
Early Facebook gaming cloud titles will be regular mobile games, which will save your phone space.
But in the future, you can play console and PC-quality games on your phone.
The new service is available today on Android – but not on the iPhone, which Facebook blames for the conflict with Apple.
Initially there are five games, all of which are mobile classics.
Release titles include: Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure, PGA Tour Golf Shootout, Solitaire: Arthur’s Tale and WWE Supercar
Facebook says it will soon add more games to Dirt Bike Uncertain and in the future.
“Cloud gaming is about expanding the types of games we already offer,” said Jason Rubin of Facebook.
“So, let’s start with the format that people enjoy playing on Facebook: games that are played for free.
“This is one of the reasons we launch games that are commonly played on mobile devices.
“In the future, our systems and infrastructure will improve to offer a wide variety of games – perhaps all kinds of games.”
Rubin said it’s completely free to try Facebook’s cloud games.
Cloud-streaming is being transformed by many as the future of gaming.
Games usually take up space on your phones, consoles and more – and require powerful processors to deliver more graphics.
But there is an alternative: deliver the game on powerful servers owned by technology companies and then stream them to you on the Internet … just like Netflix.
Today’s Internet is enough to record your movements for a game, send it to a server, provide graphics and send it back to you in a fraction of a second.
That means you can play games without taking up space on your devices.
But most importantly, it means that you can play graphically active 4K games on a smartphone – usually you will need a more expensive gaming PC.
The offer includes a lot of competing game-streaming services: Xbox, PlayStation, Amazon and Google all have their own versions.
Unfortunately for iPhone users, the new service is not available to play – Facebook is especially to blame on Apple.
“Apple treats games differently and has constant control over the most precious resource,” Rubin said.
Facebook’s new cloud-streaming system is now available in the US, but will eventually come to the UK as well.
