    Google May Move Chrome to Twice-Weekly Updates as AI Uncovers Record Number of Security Flaws

    Artificial intelligence is reshaping the way software vulnerabilities are discovered, and Google is responding by accelerating the pace of Chrome security updates. After AI-powered tools uncovered an unprecedented number of issues in recent browser releases, the technology giant is considering issuing updates twice a week to better protect users.

    Google Speeds Up Chrome Security Updates Amid AI-Driven Bug Discovery

    Google is reviewing a faster release schedule for its Chrome browser after AI-assisted analysis identified a surge in security vulnerabilities within its codebase.

    Chrome versions 149 and 150, released only weeks apart, contained a combined 1,072 bug fixes. That figure exceeds the total number of fixes delivered across the previous 23 Chrome versions combined, highlighting the growing impact of AI on software security research.

    The increase reflects the ability of modern AI tools to examine vast amounts of source code far more quickly than traditional methods, enabling previously hidden vulnerabilities to be identified at an unprecedented pace.

    Long-Standing Browser Flaws Brought to Light

    Among the issues uncovered was a security flaw that had reportedly remained undetected in Chrome for 13 years.

    Had it been exploited, the vulnerability could have enabled attackers to bypass Chrome’s sandbox protections, potentially allowing unauthorised access to files stored on a user’s device. The discovery illustrates how AI is helping security researchers identify complex weaknesses that may have gone unnoticed for years.

    Why Google Is Considering Twice-Weekly Chrome Releases

    Google has already shortened Chrome’s release cycle to one update every two weeks. However, the company is now testing an even faster approach that could see updates delivered twice each week.

    The aim is to reduce the time between identifying a vulnerability and deploying a fix, limiting the opportunity for cybercriminals to exploit newly discovered weaknesses.

    This shift reflects a broader trend across the technology sector, where software providers are under increasing pressure to respond more rapidly as AI improves both defensive security research and the tools available to malicious actors.

    AI Creates Both Opportunities and Risks

    While AI is helping Google detect security problems more efficiently, the same technology could also enable attackers to identify software vulnerabilities more quickly.

    For that reason, reducing the delay between discovery and patch deployment has become increasingly important. Faster updates are intended to minimise the window during which systems remain vulnerable.

    Getting Users to Install Updates Remains a Challenge

    Although Chrome automatically downloads updates in the background, users must usually restart the browser before those updates take effect.

    Many people postpone restarting Chrome, leaving their devices exposed to known vulnerabilities for longer than intended. This remains a significant obstacle, even if Google succeeds in releasing fixes more frequently.

    For users across the UK, where Chrome is one of the most widely used web browsers on both personal and workplace devices, prompt installation of security updates remains an important part of maintaining online safety.

    Chrome 150 Introduces ‘Zero Window Restart’ on macOS

    Google has begun addressing the installation delay with a new feature introduced in Chrome 150 for macOS.

    Known as a “zero window restart”, the feature allows Chrome to complete an update when all browser windows have been closed, even if the application continues running in the background.

    When the user launches Chrome again, the update has already been installed, removing the need for a manual restart in many situations and making the process less disruptive.

    Dynamic Patching Could Remove Restarts Altogether

    Google is also developing a more advanced update mechanism known as dynamic patching.

    The technology is designed to apply security updates without requiring the browser to restart at all. While Google has not announced a release date for the capability, the company says it continues to invest in its development as part of its long-term browser security strategy.

    Continuous Security Updates May Become the New Standard

    As AI continues to evolve, the volume of software vulnerabilities being discovered is expected to keep rising. That reality is encouraging companies such as Google to rethink traditional update models.

    Rather than relying on less frequent releases that depend on users restarting their browsers, Chrome appears to be moving towards a system in which security fixes are delivered continuously, with minimal interruption.

    For millions of users, this could mean stronger protection against emerging cyber threats while reducing the effort required to keep their browser secure.
