Relief from Infection: Class 10 students do not have to take the final exams in Berlin – Berlin

The Middle School Leaving Certificate (MSA) is due to be awarded this year due to infection without written exams. However, oral presentation selection should be retained. He learned this from the Togespigal school leaders. The Senate Department of Education on Saturday confirmed the information in response to a request.

“Teachers can better focus on imparting knowledge in the classroom so that students can get better academic qualifications during this special time,” Education Senator Sandra Shearez (SPD) explained to DocSpeak.

A similar practice has already been chosen in high schools and high schools by 2020 to make it easier for students and teachers to deal with the epidemic over the course of the school year.

School administrators responded with relief to the news: As a result of the school closure, they could only prepare their students for exams to a certain extent. It was repeatedly requested that it was more important to know the subject than to use the little time remaining for exam preparation. This consideration was already decisive in the previous year.

In addition, tenth graders have to work under very different conditions – depending on how much their schools support learning at home. If some schools voluntarily bring their graduation classes to school on Monday, these discrepancies will only get worse. Drop all three exams in Mathematics, German and Foreign Language.

The cancellation of the MSA exams in 2020 meant that the final grades of middle school students were significantly better, which is why more students were entitled to switch to high school. This confirmed the long-standing fear that pure grades were “too good”, i.e. not consistent with students’ performance: This trend emerged from the middle school reform.

The MSA in high schools is already controversial

A panel of experts led by Kiel Education Researcher Olaf Koller (SPD) recently confirmed this shortcoming and called for better teaching in German and mathematics, especially in the 9th and 10th grades.

In addition, the Commission considers that MSA exams in grammar schools are superfluous because grammar school students are already busy with high school material in the second half of the tenth grade, wasting unnecessary time returning to the “old” subject. Shires agreed with the recommendation to skip the MSA exams in grammar schools. In which the Coalition did not want to follow her.

At the request of the Association of Senior Directors of Education (VOB), its president Ralph Treptov said: “As of 2020, the cancellation of MSA exams is illogical and, considering the expected suspension of face-to-face teaching, is almost non-existent.” At the same time, there is an urgent need to “finally adapt the MSA to the requirements in Berlin.”

As announced, the VOB has been requesting a different MSA form for grammar schools for many years: since grammar school students graduate from high school in just twelve years, they must complete the MSA subject at the end of ninth or early tenth grade. The tenth grade has a dual function in grammar schools.

According to reports, this rule also applies to exams for professional training. They also fell – as they were in 2020.
