PlayStation 5: Samsung TVs do not have 4K / 120Hz with HDR

Problems with PS5: HDMI 2.1 on Samsung QLED TV 2020

PS5 owners who want to use 4K / 120Hz with HDR on Samsung TV are currently having trouble. Because unfortunately this combination is not currently working.

There are currently issues with numerous manufacturers surrounding HDMI 2.1 and its features. LG’s LED TVs are no exception. You suffer from darkening and glowing problems When using VRR. With Samsung QLEDs that support HDMI 2.1, there are now fights when using the Sony PlayStation 5. Therefore 4K / 120 Hz cannot be used with HDR.

Almost all QLED TVs will be affected by 2020

So you have to claim 4K / 60 HZ with HDR or use 4K / 120 Hz with SDR. Excitingly, this issue only affects the combination of current QLED models and the PS5. If you are using Xbox Series X (Our release report is here) The problem did not arise. The problem is compounded with the PS5 QLED Q70T, Q80T, Q85T, Q90T, Q95T, Q900R and Q950T. Why the error occurs is currently open.

The readable EDID of the Q90T's HDMI 2.1 port (HDMI 4) does not show any abnormalities

Testing our Q90T on HDMI 4 (HTML 2.1) did not make any sense to us. The bandwidth via FRL (fixed rate connection) is 10G @ 4L, i.e. 10 Gbit / s with 4 paths, resulting in a total of 40 Gbit / s. This is more than the PlayStation 5 releases (32 Gbit / s). Is the problem related to DSC video summary? It is only supported with 6G @ 4L, i.e. with 24 Gbit / s. A 4K / 120Hz 10bit signal with a 4: 2: 2 chroma requires exactly 24 Gbit / s bandwidth.

The decisive factor here is how the console emits the signal, not the resolution that a game owns. Titles like “Dirt 5” or “Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War” are plagued by problems. There are additional issues with “Dirt 5” and black gravity and incorrect color reproduction.

Samsung has not yet commented on the matter

Surprisingly, no further reports of this error have been received. However, this may be due to the fact that the PlayStation 5 is not currently fully stocked. But it is also possible that not all QLED models in the specified series will be affected – perhaps it is about some diagonal. In addition, gamers will then have to use 4K with 120Hz and HDR – which is currently only included in some games. At this point, you can wait and see when Samsung and Sony will comment on this matter.
