    Intel Nova Lake-S Tested with AVX-512 and APX as Desktop CPU Launch Plans Emerge

    Intel’s forthcoming Nova Lake-S desktop processors are reportedly undergoing testing with AVX-512 and APX instruction support, signalling the return of advanced 512-bit vector processing to the company’s mainstream desktop platform. Early testing information also points to 24-core and 28-core configurations as Intel prepares its next generation of Core Ultra desktop chips.

    Intel Tests 24-Core and 28-Core Nova Lake-S Processors

    Information shared by @InstLatX64 indicates that Intel is testing at least two Nova Lake-S processor configurations. One is a 24-core model operating at 3.4 GHz, while the other features 28 cores running at 3.2 GHz.

    Both processors reportedly support AVX-512 and APX, reinforcing earlier indications that Intel intends to restore capabilities that have been absent from its mainstream desktop processors for several generations.

    Intel provided an earlier indication of this direction when it published its 60th Architecture Instruction Set Extensions and Future Features manual late last year. The documentation suggested that 512-bit vector processing would return to desktop processors after being unavailable across recent consumer generations.

    AVX-512 Returns to Intel Desktop CPUs

    AVX-512 provides 512-bit-wide vector instructions designed to accelerate workloads capable of processing large quantities of data simultaneously. Its return could be particularly relevant for specialised professional applications, scientific computing and other heavily vectorised software.

    Intel previously disabled AVX-512 on its Alder Lake and Raptor Lake consumer processor families. One reason was the hybrid architecture used by those chips, where Performance cores and Efficiency cores had different capabilities, complicating consistent software support.

    As a result, AVX-512 remained primarily associated with Intel’s Xeon server processors and other higher-end computing platforms.

    Nova Lake appears set to change that approach. The new generation is expected to combine Coyote Cove Performance cores with Arctic Wolf Efficiency cores, with both designs supporting AVX-512 and APX.

    This could make it easier for developers to optimise software across the processor rather than accounting for different instruction-set capabilities between core types.

    APX Support Expands Nova Lake’s Instruction Capabilities

    Alongside AVX-512, the processors are being tested with Intel’s Advanced Performance Extensions (APX).

    The combination could bring mainstream desktop processors closer to the instruction capabilities available in Intel’s high-end desktop and Xeon server platforms, potentially widening the range of workloads able to benefit from hardware acceleration.

    The impact for typical UK PC users will ultimately depend on software support. Everyday applications and games may not immediately benefit from the additional instructions, while specialised productivity and computational workloads could make greater use of them as developers introduce optimisations.

    Core Ultra 400 Nova Lake-S Line-up Takes Shape

    Nova Lake-S is expected to form the basis of Intel’s Core Ultra 400 desktop processor family, accompanied by changes to the company’s product branding and segmentation.

    Intel is reportedly preparing processors with either one or two compute dies. Individual compute dies are expected to offer configurations of up to eight Coyote Cove P-Cores and 16 Arctic Wolf E-Cores, while the I/O die could contain an additional four low-power Efficiency cores, or LPE-Cores.

    The single-compute-die versions are expected to reach the market first, followed later by more powerful dual-compute-die processors.

    Nova Lake-S Launches Expected Across Early 2027

    Intel is reportedly considering separate launch windows for different Nova Lake-S configurations rather than releasing the entire range simultaneously.

    The 28-core Nova Lake-S DS variant, representing a new segment within the line-up, is expected during the first quarter of 2027.

    Intel’s unlocked K-series processors, aimed primarily at enthusiasts and users interested in overclocking, are reportedly scheduled for an early second-quarter launch, potentially between March and April.

    The range is then expected to expand further, with a 52-core flagship Nova Lake-S processor reportedly planned for late May.

    Nova Lake Could Mark a Significant Desktop Architecture Shift

    The reported restoration of AVX-512 is one of the more notable architectural changes expected from Nova Lake-S. By introducing compatible Performance and Efficiency cores, Intel appears to be addressing one of the main obstacles that complicated support for the instruction set in earlier hybrid desktop processors.

    With 24-core and 28-core engineering configurations already reportedly being tested and higher-core-count models planned, Nova Lake-S is shaping up to be a substantial update to Intel’s desktop portfolio. The practical benefits of AVX-512 and APX will depend heavily on software adoption, but their return could give developers and professional users access to capabilities that have largely been restricted to Intel’s server and specialist computing platforms in recent years.
