So their target is usually among normal users, hackers decide to attack other hackers by distributing malware in hacking kits. When they think they’re downloading real malware, sprinklers actually install software that steals clipboard data, which allows attackers to recover crypto wallet passwords.

It is not uncommon for hackers to attack unsuspecting targets, even large companies trained in cyber security. On the other hand, they are more likely to attack their allies. There really are precedents, namely the REvil partnership, which sold ransomware infected with camouflaged backdoor. But examples can be counted off the finger.

However, the practice does not appear to be isolated. In fact, two reports explain that hackers have detected the presence of counterfeit malware on forums. The first is the “clipboard thief”, which is malicious software capable of stealing data from the victim’s clipboard. This type of program is mainly used to recover the passwords of crypto wallets and then intercept transactions before they can be secured.

    Hackers will also be hacked

Thus, ASEC detected the spread of fake clipboard theft in forums such as Russia Black Hot. When hackers think they are downloading a malware called BitRAT or Quasar RAT, which they pay 20 to 100 euros for, they actually install the software, which runs automatically on the system folders to steal the first restart, stealth data.

Cyble’s second report explains that some forums offer a monthly trial of AvD Crypto Stealer, a malware that, as its name implies, aims to steal victims’ crypto wallets. The mechanics are the same: once installed, the software attacks the developing hacker’s computer with a clipboard thief. A move that has brought in about 49,000 euros for its authors.
