(CNN) – While most of us yearn for the days when we can fly indoors and out again, the world’s leading aviation hubs for 2020 were revealed at the Skytrax World Airport Awards.
And in what will hardly surprise anyone, Singapore Changi Airport has been crowned for the eighth consecutive year as “the best airport in the world”.
Tokyo Haneda Airport took second place and Doha Hamad International Airport rose to third place.
The awards, voted by customers in a global survey of airport customer satisfaction, were originally scheduled to take place on April 1 at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Paris, which was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Instead, the 2020 price announcements were made on May 10 during a virtual ceremony that took place live on YouTube.
“After delaying the price announcement for almost six weeks, we felt that now was the time to try to bring joy to the airport industry during these difficult times,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, in a press release.
As in 2019, East Asia dominated this year’s World Airport Awards, with seven of the top 10 airports for 2020 based in the region – including four in Japan.

With a spectacular donut-shaped exterior framed in steel and glass, the addition of 135,700 square meters (approximately 1.46 million square feet) was designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Jewel’s flagship attraction is the 40-meter (about 130 feet) HSBC Rain Vortex, which cascades through a huge oculus in the middle and is touted as the tallest indoor waterfall in the world.
“Changi Airport is honored to receive this affirmation from our travelers, made possible by the strong support of our airport partners,” said Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of Changi Airport Group in a pre-recorded clip released during the ceremony online.
“It has been a difficult year for all of us. Like everyone here at Changi, we continue to do our best to safeguard and protect the health of our travelers, visitors and airport workers. We wish to all members of the international aviation community we look forward to better times and soon. ”
Haneda, in Tokyo, is the fifth busiest airport in the world. However, it delivered 85.6% of flights on time in 2018, making it the most punctual mega-airport in the world.
Japan dominates several categories
