Zelda Breath of the Wild: How to Shield Surf?

We've all wanted to try it as soon as we got a shield. Here's how!

This is probably one of the coolest ways to enjoy the endless possibilities of Zelda Breath of the Wild. Take out an opponent, steal his shield, go up the hill like the child you are and just dive, Shield Surf. But after the first hours of play, we found out that it’s not that simple to trigger this action without knowing first how to do it. That’s why we decided to put this quick tutorial.

First off, you’ll need a shield. Duh. The easiest way is just to find the closest Bokoblin camp around you and steal one from them. Or you can hunt for a nice solid shield thanks to our guide on Armors and Outfits. Once that’s done, do up a nice hill. Careful though, if it’s too steep you’ll just slide off the edge and fall in your despair (if you don’t have the paraglider yet). Now, you’re up the hill, ready to do some Shield Surf. Press ZL to hold up your improvised “board”, just as if you’re protecting yourself. Then, hit A…. and enjooooooooy!! Want to be even cooler? Just press Y, oh yeah you can call yourself “The Shaun White of Hyrule” now.

Just keep in mind that Shield Surf is going to make your shield live a hard time. The weaker it is, the less time of surfing you’ll get. And there’s always the risk of breaking during the activity. If that happens, you’ll tumble. So be careful and pack some food with you to get your health up.
