Super Mario 3D World + Bowser

We tested our concept on the switch

With only 13.5 million units sold to gamers throughout its life, the Wii U was not really a big hit for Nintendo. Unlike Switch, in four years, it has already sold 68 million copies. This explains the shifting of many games from black sheep to duck laying golden eggs, via various ports and other remasters. To date we have already got our hands on the switch version of the latest adaptation Super Mario 3D World. As its title suggests, it has a big bonus of having a more furious bowser than usual.

But let’s start by looking at the original game, which expands its multiplayer capabilities by taking advantage of its arrival on the switch. Although the Wii U version can only run four people locally, in 2021 Mario, Luigi, Beach and Todd can be mixed as desired: locally or online, with two players on the same console. Adventure together is not mandatory, but alone, we still miss the joy of throwing our friends away. Switch’s technical skills are sufficient to run the game at sixty frames per second, aided by the usual art direction of Mario games, which is not technically demanding, but very useful for sight. In addition, in order to further enhance the game, the movements of the characters on the sets have been significantly accelerated compared to the Wii U version.

Among the innovations, we also see the compatibility with Amoeba, which stimulates the appearance of useful objects, as well as the relatively advanced photo mode, which not only allows you to change the angle, zoom position and filters, but also add logos or stickers for capture, the latter being collected at different levels. Clever! Switch “Motion Gaming” is also used because it can point the screen with the right jacon, allowing you to control the cursor and change the position of certain modules. If you are playing in portable mode you can do this by directly touching the screen. However, the game remains identical to its predecessor. This is always a question of freeing the angels captured by Bowser, by traveling in relatively short time on relatively linear levels but well done. The walls are turned into iconic cat breaks that allow for walking and climbing. This also applies to Captain Todd mini-levels, which you can turn to to find the best way to access the stars.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury

Bowser VS Mario: One will fall

If you want real good big news, you should turn to Bowser’s Fury section. Accessible from the main menu with Super Mario 3D World, Bowser’s Fury is actually its own game that is completely different and very different from the original adventure. Also, playing not only four but two, asymmetrically means that one player plays a good role (Mario) and the other is satisfied in guiding his partner. (Bowser Jr.). In solitude, this is artificial intelligence, which guides Bowser’s descendants according to the help that can be adjusted in three tips (no, not at all, a little, a lot). Relatively autonomous, our team player can collect coins, kill enemies or bring bonuses by repainting certain parts of the decor. To do this, you can mark a point of interest with the cursor or in touch mode.

If Mario finds himself paired with Bowser Jr., it seems because the latter’s father went into the woods. More intimidating and grandiose than ever, it is now covered with a strange dark substance that stains some elements of the decor. To clean it all up, Mario must turn on the headlights thanks to the harvest, not the stars or moons, but the feline stars. Unlike Super Mario 3D World, which is divided into different worlds and levels, Bowser’s Fury offers us a completely open area in which we can move freely. Another interesting thing: Bowser usually emerges from the water in an unrecorded way (meaning these scenes are not triggered by the player’s actions): the storm rises and the rain drops, matching the anger that significantly changes the situation. To fall, the sky darkens and falls around our beloved Mario in flaming projectiles, thus complicating the task for a few minutes.
