Thursdays are very popular for podcast downloads

According to the Australian Podcast Rankings, Thursday is the most popular day of the week for podcast downloads.

The final year insights of the rankings, released by Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) and Triton Digital, show that 17% of podcasts were downloaded on Thursday, followed by 16.2% and 16.1% on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, respectively.

Radio show catch-ups are the most popular type, with 101.3 million downloads this year, followed by real crime, with 67.6 million downloads, comedy, 63.5 million downloads and news, with 51.9 million downloads.

The ranking publishers delivered more than 420.8 million podcast livestreams or downloads from January to the end of November.

“2020 is a great year for podcasting, and Australian Podcast Ranker is now tracking 2,600 active podcasts across a wide range of genres and publishers,” says John Warner, CEO of industry body Commercial Radio Australia.

“Radio show podcasts were very active with 101.3 million downloads by 2020. This is no surprise as it echoes the strong popularity of radio by epidemic, and these shows reflect an audience that already holds.”

An average of 1.9 hours of podcast content was downloaded per device in November, up from 1.7 hours in January.

The radio industry began tracking the most downloaded and listened to podcasts in Australia this year, and now includes publishers such as Southern Cross Osterio, News Corp Australia, Schwartz Media and Nova Entertainment.
