It seems that our planet has recently decided to accelerate its rotation rate and finish its days faster and faster until it goes faster than it really is: in 2020, it broke the record for the shortest day… 28 times.
Instability
Not surprisingly, Earth Days were not regular at first. Thanks to the development of satellites, we have a record of the length of days since 1973, and were able to observe that the Earth’s rotation never lasts exactly 24 hours or 86,400 seconds. Sometimes it is a millisecond longer, other times it is less than half a millisecond. The length of a day increases and decreases cyclically every two weeks.
