Stores actually close at 10pm: Federal emergency break hits Berlin supermarkets and Spetis – Berlin

Not yet considered: If the federal emergency breaks, even the supermarkets and spades in Berlin should close at 10pm. Although this is not explicitly stated in the amendment to the Infection Protection Act, it is a result of night out restrictions. With the exception of the curfew order from 10pm to 5am, no purchases were made, not even for daily necessities.

Many Berlin supermarkets are usually open until 11pm or midnight. They are still allowed to do so – only customers are no longer allowed to come. Employees can of course go home after 10pm because going home from work is part of the professional practice, thus allowing an exceptional stay outside the apartment. Spades, a popular point of contact for minor mistakes in the evening or at night, is also affected by this regulation.

The activity of snacks and other restaurants is explicitly regulated by federal law. Consumption is somehow prohibited on the spot, and carrying is prohibited from 10pm to 5am. However, snack bars and restaurants do not have to be closed – because food can be served around the clock. This means that the collection of distribution services is still allowed, and they – as they operate – are allowed to move around the clock.

The economy is struggling with new rules. On Saturday, the Berlin-Brandenburg Chamber of Commerce warned of a wave of overall bankruptcies in the retail sector. About 50 to 60 percent of shoppers in the region expect business to close by the end of this year, Managing Director Niles Bush-Peterson said on the first day of the federal emergency break. Due to the new rules, customers in many places will have to wait in line in front of supermarkets, where the risk of infection in the group will increase.

Trade Association: Barriers to store survival are very high

The “click & meet” concept, i.e. the online arrangement of a shopping meeting with a shop visit test, is unreliable and will exclude other customers. “It’s many obstacles.” Bush-Peterson has been accused of bringing politics to its knees with unreliable terms. Most companies are still waiting for the promised help.

Berlin grocery stores are often even busier in the evenings. There is no denying that federal regulation will increase before 10pm in the future. However, the Infection Protection Act has a clear limit on the number of customers in stores: one person per 20 square meters for the first 800 square meters retail space and 40 people per 40 square meters above 800 square meters.

This means that half the people can now be in the supermarkets as before. Bush-Peterson talked about an “arbitrary square meter”. (with dpa)
