Outlook Express for Windows 10: Review

Outlook Express for Windows 10: Review

Outlook Express is definitely not the best email program under Windows XP. For many, however, this is part of their “computer life” – mentioning it evokes nostalgic feelings for one or another person. After you have replaced Internet Explorer 6 with Firefox and installed Thunderbird on Windows XP (to replace Outlook Express). Outlook Express is now able to support Thunderbird better than ever: there is an unofficial successor to the Microsoft Mail program. Especially and leaning in design matters OE Classic Strongly reminiscent of the original. In this article you will find some operating instructions for the software and an evaluation of what OE Classic is best for.

Installing OE Classic is safer and more resource efficient than installing Windows XP. Since support will end in 2014, it will no longer receive updates – working here due to operating glitches is no longer fun. Windows XP can run on a virtual machine, such as a virtual box, but costs a few hundred megabytes (MB) of RAM. The 32 bit program OE Classic, on the other hand, was satisfied with about 11 MB of RAM in our test system.

Outlook Express vs. Windows (Live) Mail

The OE Classic user interface is available in German or English. The same is true of Windows XP: if the system is in German, so is Outlook Express. The icons on the OE Classic top icon bar look modern – at least more modern than the menu bar above, which reveals the classic charm. If you start with Windows XP OE, you already have the mail: “Microsoft Outlook Express Team” sends you a message entitled “Welcome”. Clicking on it reveals nostalgia. In addition to the further email text below, you can read a column on the right:

This project was created with the aim of meeting all your email and news team news needs”.

History of on-board resource email programs

The original Outlook Express can be found in Windows XP. OE is no longer from Windows Vista: Microsoft replaced it with Windows Mail. It is placed in a prominent place in the Start menu: at the very top is “Internet” (and the weakest font is in “Internet Explorer”), below is an “e-mail” entry (below it you can read the weakest font is “Windows Mail”). Based on the source code of Windows 7 Vista, although its purpose was reduced: the code was supposed to make the Diet system faster than its predecessors, which was criticized as dull. Not only does Windows 7 have less code and system services than Vista, but it also distributes to movie makers and email clients. However, users will find the download link in the Start menu: If you enter “Mail” there, “Download Windows Live Essentials from the Internet” (Windows Live Mail in the essential package, among others). As Microsoft announced on its “Windows Essentials” page, it no longer offers the package for download. Windows 8 (.1) and Windows 10 bring an email application back with them: an application – which runs in fullscreen mode in Windows 10 and in a window (and optionally fullscreen only) in Windows 10.

Windows 10 1709 (+) Outlook Express Legacy

Incidentally, Outlook Express is not completely out of the table under Windows 10: Microsoft tops the list
“Features and functionality removed in Windows 10”.
There you will find the line “Outlook Express”. The provider describes the program as a legacy application (meaning “obsolete”) and claims to have removed the customer through Windows 10 1709 (Fall Creators Update). Accordingly, some versions of Windows 10 apparently contained the remaining Outlook Express code (resulting in 1709 predecessors, i.e. 1507, 1511, 1607 and 1703). Became OE and could not boot under Windows 10. You can find more information in our article with our Windows Useless Knowledge article and tips for PC legacy use purposes.

An end to the OE Classic project

OE is fun for Classic Outlook Express lovers, but in terms of functionality and functionality it is a weak competitor to Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird. The latter program is characterized by several ready-made add-ons; The OE Classic cannot continue here. In terms of handling, a click on the “new email” indicates that you have not yet added an account – but it does not help to set up an account. You can do this by going to “Tools> Accounts> Add> Next”. There are IMAP and POP protocols. In testing under Windows 10, sending emails did not work at first, but later worked with the @ web.de freemail address. Receipt of emails was not immediately successful, but later it was successful. The design options for the new emails are a plus, the insertable smileys offer even more to the eye. In terms of footage, the signature has one drawback: for example, OE Classic adds an ad on its behalf to emails sent below (“New Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail Replacement – Get Here: https: //www.oeclassic .com /”). Users of some Internet freemail services also struggle with this problem.
