Myanmar’s UN ambassador to the United Nations, Qao Mo Tun, has called on the international community at the UN General Assembly to stop the military junta from seizing power in his country. He represents the democratically elected civilian government in the country, the diplomat said at a meeting of the organization in New York on Friday. “We need strong action by the international community to end the military coup, stop the oppression of innocent people, restore power to the people and restore democracy.”
At the end of his ten-minute speech, he created a greeting using three fingers, which is used by protesters in Myanmar. Many at the meeting later applauded, and Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United States, described the address as “brave”.
In early February, the military in Myanmar fought Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi. The 75-year-old won the November parliamentary election by a clear margin. Meanwhile, the new head of the Election Commission, appointed by the military junta, has declared the results of the November parliamentary elections invalid. The newspaper “The Irrawaddy” reported that Thein Cho announced the decision on Friday during a meeting with political parties in the Southeast Asian country.

In Myanmar, security forces again attacked protesters on Saturday. Massive security forces have reportedly used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters in other cities. Police in Rangoon also targeted journalists who reported on the protests, according to the online portal Myanmar Now. (dpa)
