Nintendo: Offline services without warning from the manufacturer

A new turning point in Nintendo’s history seems to be happening faster than expected: Wednesday, March 16, 2022, Eurocomer Detected online store dedicated to Wii U and DSi. Most worryingly, Nintendo did not report anything about the maintenance of these stores, causing many players to be surprised and worried.

Can I close online stores in advance?

We have been aware for some time that the Nintendo eShop will not be available on Wii U and 3DS family consoles from March 2023. Long before that, channels dedicated to these consoles in eShop already did not allow you to buy anything. 2019 and 2017, respectively.

While these consoles were often nostalgic for a number of “current” reasons, many players wanted to re-download some of the games they had purchased.

However, as of Wednesday, March 16, 2022, eShop will not be directly accessible on the Wii U or DSi. When first exploring the temporary maintenance path, some players said they were successful in downloading games and DLCs through third-party software, especially NUSDownloader, thus suggesting that the store actually works … and it does not. Directly accessible.

Nintendo has not yet announced whether to close these services in advance, suggesting that this is more of a bug or error than the Japanese manufacturer’s actual preference. The official press release announcing the closure of these stores still shows a paragraph stating that content purchased before the store closes can be downloaded “indefinitely later”:

The same goes for the content purchased in the DSi Store, the official newsletter states that it will be downloaded until an undefined date:

The ability to re-download purchased content or transfer content to the Nintendo 3DS family system will continue indefinitely after the Nintendo DSi Shop closes. If you’re thinking about converting your DSiWare content to the Nintendo 3DS family system, we encourage you to do so at your convenience as long as the service is still available.

(Proof)

So, is it Nintendo’s simple mistake or real choice to close these stores permanently? We will learn more in the next few days … or not, unfortunately, this will ensure that the situation does not develop in favor of users.
