By June 2022, Apple plans to convert all of its Macs into domestically developed processors within two years. It all started in late 2020 with the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13 and Mac Mini. Now Apple is coming to iMac with Silicon.

Instead of a 21.5-inch screen diagonal, the new iMac Retina has a 24-inch display with 4.5K resolution (4480 x 2520 = 11.3 million pixels), true tone, anti-reflective finish and extended P3 color space. The design approximates the Pro-XDR display: the edges around the panel are small at the top, but the case is very angular, but only 11.5 millimeters thick. Two small fans provide cooling. The display may be tilted, but will not adjust to the height again. For the first time, many colors are available such as green, yellow, orange, rose, purple, blue and silver.

Innovations include a 1080p camera with image enhancement and an advanced dynamic range, as well as an advanced sound system with six speakers, spatial audio, Dolby Atmos and downward radiation bass. Three microphones connected in a row should reach studio quality.

The power case does not find much space and is out. Some models include an Ethernet port. WLAN operates according to WiFi 6 standard. There are Imax with only two Thunderbolt ports, and the other has two USB Type-C sockets.

For the first time, a new keyboard on the same model will include a Touch ID fingerprint sensor to unlock certain models. The mouse or trackpad is the same color as the iMac.

Apple’s ARM-based M1 is used as the Soc (System on Chip) on both the current Mac Mini and two M1 MacBooks (tested on Mac & I release 1/2021). There are models with seven graphics cores and eight, but all have eight CPU cores. 8GB RAM and 256GB SST are standard. The basic configuration costs 1450 euros and is available in green, pink, blue or silver only. If you want seven colors, two additional USB-C ports, Touch ID, eight graphics cores and Ethernet, it starts at 1670 euros. The new iMac will be available from April 30th. Can be ordered in advance and must be in stores by the second half of May. For 230 euros you will get 512GB SST instead of 256GB SST. The Apple Store cannot configure more memory than 8GB of RAM at this time, so the extra charge is not yet clear. 16GB RAM max. Technical data can be found here.
