Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple standardize browser extensions

Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple standardize browser extensions

Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and four Internet companies Apple I like to work together on the quality of browser extensions. The goal is to make it easier for developers to write extensions. Uniform interfaces are to be provided for this.

Recently, Edge providers, Chrome, Firefox And Safari WebExtensions Community Group (WECG) Connected. The team was founded by the World Wide Web Federation (W3C) and wants to work with developers to create a standard. Plug-in developers must rely on standard functions, interfaces, and authorizations.
Four browser providers have established the WebExtensions Community Group

WECG wants to try to maintain compatibility with existing extensions and related interfaces. Extension developers should be given the opportunity to write programs that save energy and do not have a negative impact on performance.

Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple want to prevent numerous extensions from being available to a specific browser. Due to different APIs and key functions, it is difficult for developers to provide existing add-ons to other browsers.

There are no plans for a joint venture

As a first step, the WebExtensions community panel wants to create a similar profile for browser extensions. Companies may develop this in the future. However, there are currently no plans for a common plugin that can be used by all browsers. Instead, each provider will run its own store and provide extensions for downloading themselves.
