Lichtenberg, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Treptow-Köpenick: Tens of thousands of Berlin families without heat and hot water – Berlin

Tens of thousands of families have been affected by the massive failure of the heat and hot water supply in Berlin since Sunday afternoon. The cause was the failure of the Klingenberg Thermal Power Station.

There are various reports on the number of affected families. Initially there was talk of 370,000 families, with Wattenfall talking about 90,000 families as the operator of the heating network. According to Vattenfall, the Friedrichsfelde municipal heating network has been affected. “The heating power plant malfunctioned at 2:04 pm due to a malfunction in the external electrical structure,” a Waterfall spokesman said.

The reason was a fault in a substation, which only affected the gas-fired thermal power plant. “The power plant must be shut down and restarted.” At 3:15 pm, the power supply was steady.

In the evening, a spokesman said the heat supply would be “fully restored”. Heat production should resume at 8pm, “customers should be provided with space heating and warm water again at midnight”.

The Lichtenberg District Office is urging victims to keep windows and doors closed and ventilate only when needed to retain heat. “Keep yourself warm with extra clothing and blankets.” Also, open fires (gas grill, charcoal grill) should not be lit and the apartment should not be heated by the stove as there is a risk of suffocation. Candles and electric heaters should not be overlooked.

The district office requests you to stand with a needy or elderly neighbor: keep fire and police emergency lines free inside and out for emergencies. Property managers and caretakers should also not call about heat failure so they can access other incidents. (Teaspoon)

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this message stated that the authority had also failed. In fact, it was a district heat failure caused by a previous power outage. We apologize for the inconvenience.
