Cold-resistant Korean mosquito spreads in northern Italy – Biotech

The cold-fearing Korean mosquito has now begun to capture northern Italy: first reported in Belluno in 2011, it has become increasingly widespread in Lombardy, where it has not been ruled out that it may have landed on international flights to the Oreo Al Serio airport. This was revealed by research conducted by the University of Milan in the journal Parasites and Vector.

In the summer of 2020, during a site monitoring program that introduced new invasive mosquitoes between the provinces of Bergamo and Prussia, researchers collected about 6,000 larvae and hundreds of mosquito eggs from water storage (small ponds, artificial tanks, etc.) and containers.

Many of these mosquitoes have been identified as belonging to the genus Aedes coricus, probably from the population of the Jeju district of the South Korean volcanic island. “The Korean mosquito is found only in Japan, northern China, South Korea and parts of Russia,” explains Sarah Epis, professor of biological sciences and research coordinator. “In the province of Belluno in Italy in 2011, it was reported at altitudes and climatic conditions suitable for the survival of the first type of mosquitoes. Since then there have been reports of an increase in northern Italy. It has already colonized the large mountainous region of Vanito and Trentino. “
