Brussels wants to impose USB-C charger on all smartphones, even Apple

This week, the European Commission will file a draft order requiring manufacturers of smartphones and tablets to adopt a single charger with the obligation to integrate a USB Type-C port.

In addition to its closed operating system, Apple may not be the only one to manufacture smartphones and tablets like other patches. The US manufacturer has been using Lightning Charger for many years, while the USB-C port is becoming more and more popular in all mobile stores of other manufacturers.

But according to our colleagues Echoes, The European Commission will try to bend the apple “Introduce a plan for Apple, Huawei, Nokia and others to order their devices sold in Europe with universal and functional chargers”. This means that all devices must be equipped with a USB Type-C port, although there is a possibility of embedding a second port, and the cables must be used on any device without losing power. The draft order is due out on Thursday, September 23rd.

Will it come into force in 2024?

In fact, the plan is not just aimed at Apple, even though the company is very concerned about the ten million devices sold each year. This command should include a wide selection of connected devices: Headphones, Speakers, Cameras … A measure already taken by some manufacturers, which aims to reduce electronic waste.

On the agenda, the Commission aims to finally adopt the text in the first half of 2022 and then take effect in 2024. This is not the first time Europe has shown interest in the single charger issue and the first steps are in progress. This material is already from 2009. It is true that various conflicts between Europe and Apple have so far failed in this regard.
