Although the MacOS 12 will be available to all users in a few months, many are still using older versions of the Mac operating system that have been available for free by Apple for the past few days.
Until recently, you had to download OS X 10.7 Lion and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Had to pay 21.99, but now Apple has Results To provide both operating systems for free.

Mountain Lion worked at Lion Max before its release in 2012. Mountain Lion works on the new Max, but downgrading can often only be done by completely redesigning the hard disk. Additionally, the oldest operating system that Mac M1 can run is Big Sur.
