Many users have reported that their Alienware laptop is equipped with GeForce RTX 3070 with 4608 computer units instead of 5120. The problem is, this castration by Dell reduces efficiency by 10%.

Many buyers of the Alienware M15R5 laptop have been surprised by the lower performance than expected. By launching GPU-Z software that allows them to know the characteristics of the graphics card, they realized that there are no 512 computing units. Believing there was a bug in the GPU-Z software, a user contacted its creator and the creator confirmed the information provided by the software.

In fact, although there are many versions of the GeForce RTX 3070 for laptops, the only adjustment variable is that its thermal casing ranges from 80 to 125 W, thus changing the maximum operating frequencies.
The number of computing units (CUDA cores) is fixed and generally does not vary. Therefore, a mobile GeForce RTX 3070 should have 5120 computing units. So 512 is missing in the GeForce RTX 3070 of the Alienware m15 R5 which only offers 412608
Features of GeForce RTX 3070 Mobile.
By reducing the number of units in the BIOS of the graphics card, Dell reduces the performance of the GeForce RTX 3070 on its laptop by about 10%, allowing the heat output to be reduced accordingly. In doing so, it adds even more transparency to the ultimate performance of PCs equipped with the Dell GeForce RTX 3000, as their DGP varies from one model to another and is rarely marked.
