The “hierarchical model of galaxy formation” describes, to a lesser extent technically, the principle of “big eats small”: large galaxies grow together with smaller galaxies. Researchers working with Alessio Muciarelli of the University of Bologna have tested the principle of “eating small meals” using the large galactic cloud, now a satellite galaxy in our own Milky Way galaxy. Their conclusion: Yes, initially small galaxies such as the large Magellanic cloud also grow by merging one or another dwarf galaxy. Study Appears in “Natural Astronomy” magazine.
