Other unplanned updates fix a bug when printing graphics in Windows 10

Additional special updates for Microsoft Windows 10 will fix a bug in the graphics printer caused by March Patchday. After installing security updates from March 9, 2021, some users encountered problems with blue screens, application crashes or incorrect graphic printers when printing.

With special updates released on March 15, 2021, Microsoft kept at least blue screens under control for most users. This does not fix a bug in the graphics functions used by the printer drivers. As a result, many printers around the world do not print documents with graphic content or print them in full.

Other special updates for Windows 10

These issues are now being addressed with the following special updates for Windows 10 starting March 18, 2021.

• KB5001649: Out-band update for Windows 10 version 2004 and 20H2 and related Windows server versions
• KB5001648: Out-band update for Windows 10 version 1909 and Server version 1909
• KB5001638: Windows 10 Edition 1809 and Server Edition 1809 (Enterprise / Education / LDSC)
• KB5001634: Out-band update for Windows 10 version 1803 and Server version 1803 (corporate / educational)
• KB5001633: Out-band update for Windows 10 version 1607 (enterprise / education) and server version
• KB5001631: Out-band update for Windows 10 version 1507 (RTM) (Enterprise LDSC)

On March 18, Microsoft also submitted update updates for older LDSC variants 1507 and 1607, which, according to the support article, only fix graphics errors when printing. Unplanned updates for Windows 7 / 8.1 and server peers are not yet available.

The update can be installed using the “Windows Update” function. A custom update compatible with the Windows 10 version must be found there and provided for installation. There is also an unplanned update Microsoft Update List Manually downloadable. However, in WSUS, Microsoft did not provide the update; It will have to be imported manually here.

Installations problem

Meanwhile, the KB5001649 update via the Windows update function has received feedback on the Internet from some users who ended up with an installation error 0x80070541. One possible reason seems to be a mismatch between the provided update package and the installed service layer updates.

This approach is a viable solution: Download both the KB5001649 update and the last serviced stack update (SSU) from the Microsoft Update list, install them manually, restart and check for updates again. Invalid custom update will disappear from the view of the “Windows Update” page.

With WSUS systems, there is a perception among customers that the update is not always properly installed because no restart requests are triggered. In these cases, manual installation on affected customers should also be considered.
