It was actually a question-and-answer session with three applicants for the post of CDU chairman – but Federal Health Minister Jens Spann made a plea to Armin Lashett to speak at the Digital CDU party conference on Saturday. “Armin Lacet has shown that he can unite the country and unite the party. He lives in harmony,” Span said of the North Rhine-Westphalian prime minister, who later won the online election for CDU leader.

Lacet and Spawn competed as a team at the party conference. After his election, Lacet proposed Spaan for the post of Vice President. Span also got it – but with 589 votes he got the worst result of five applicants. In his appeal to Laschett, Spawn casually calculated the population of North Rhine-Westphalia: “Armin Laschett has so far guided the Germans of the North Rhine-Westphalia through this epidemic with energy, determination and prudence,” he said. Germany has a population of 83.1 million. A quarter of that would be less than 20.8 million – NRW has a population of only 17.9 million.

On Sunday, Spann regretted his controversial appearance. “Looking back, I see: this is not the right format,” the CDU politician wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “I’m sorry.” As Lacet’s team partner, he wanted to promote the NRW prime minister again before the party leader was elected. “It irritated some people.” At the same time, Span called on the CDU to unite: “After our party convention, we must now stand behind our leader, Armin Lachet, and stand together for the victory of the union.”

Lacette on Saturday rejected criticism of Span. The new CDU leader said “I thought it was right” when he recorded the ARD program “Accept Color” on Saturday. That was the point of “debate.” He knew Span wanted to say something. Lacet was a “team partner” in the struggle for party leadership.
When asked if Span had damaged himself by his attitude, Lacet said: “I do not know. Of course, Norbert Rodgen and Friedrich Mers’ friends did not think it was the best. “Along with Lacette, Rodgen and Mers were candidates for the party leadership. (dpa)
