Use Google Translate Offline – How It Works

The Google Translator – Also known as Google Translate – This is without a doubt one of the most useful Google tools. It can be used to translate words, phrases and whole paragraphs into other languages at a relatively high standard. However, there is a limitation: as a rule, the software requires an Internet connection. We’ll tell you how to use Google Translate offline. This also applies to instant translation via camera.

Important: The Google Translator portfolio contains a total of 108 languages. However, only 59 of these language packs can be downloaded and used offline. If your language is not one of the “chosen ones”, you will inevitably need an internet connection to translate.

Use the Google Translator Offline Quick Start Guide

  1. Open the Google Translate app and click on the three-line menu at the top left (see Figure 1).
  2. Target the sub-item “Offline Translation” (see Figure 2).
  3. Select a language and press the download icon (see Figure 3).
  4. Click “Download” (see Figure 4).

The process is basically the same for iPhones and iPods. However, in the first step you need to select the gear settings instead of the typical three line menu for Android.

Remove offline languages

Google Language Pack is amazingly small. Of course, the size will vary depending on the language selected, but the package size is usually 40 to 50 MB. If you still want to delete a language, repeat the steps listed above until point 2. However, it is not the download icon, but the garbage can icon that is clicked (see Figure 5).

Google Translate does not always update language files automatically. If updates are available, they will be displayed in the same menu where languages are added or removed.
