Matching these LinkBuds WF-L900 with transceivers should have been a minor achievement for Sony. The appearance of the donut requires the integration of a ring-shaped speaker, which, as we know, is the primary for headphones. True-wireless. Despite the equivalent promises for better audio processing WF-1000XM4, LinkBuds are far from wonders with almost no bass and especially a shrill public rendering. Rendering depends on the position of the headphones in the ear, which is complicated by the relative difficulty in positioning them correctly.
The frequency response curve speaks for itself: the sound signature of this LinkBuds gives the most pronounced peak with the overall decline of bass and treble at the midrange level. When listening, it distorts the sounds of many musical instruments and results in a beautiful and unpleasant rendering that makes the voices more important and nuanced than they should be. Harmonic instruments such as overdrive guitars, brass or horns are also exaggerated. This rendering is particularly tiring for long periods of time and quickly causes headaches because the human ear is very sensitive to the high frequency area elevated by these headphones (2-3 kHz). Also, due to their open form, it is not uncommon to have to drastically increase the volume in animated contexts to hear your music properly, thereby reinforcing this aesthetic aspect, but the sound leaks to the greatest dissatisfaction of the people nearby.
With such architecture, the apparent deviation of the bass had to be feared. Their most “dry” reproduction is without any warmth or round feeling: only the attacks of the instruments remain (batting on the bass drum, beating on the guitars, slapping on the bass …). In addition to this consequential decline, the bass does not experience extraordinary accuracy, which reinforces the difficulty of accurately locating the various official sources in this frequency region, even in simple combinations.
The maximum is affected by a certain slope compared to the MITS. Thus they seem to be softer and less subtle than usual: some instruments, such as flutes, shakers or other bells, can sometimes seem confusing. The lack of this definition, coupled with the strong highlighting of the media, makes it difficult to identify sources that are grouped together at the same level. The “open” shape of the headphones gives a good view of the sound width.
