First list of ND residents in the download rankings

Residents of the northern region have said that the country is unlikely to be hungry for more data when it comes to internet use.

Regions topped the list of monthly data usage for 2020 released by Telstra on Thursday.

They downloaded an average of 327.98 gigabytes per month, equivalent to 82 high definition movies.

The Victorians were next. They downloaded 316.17 gigabytes per month and were locked in their homes due to the corona virus.

Queensland is in third place (316.19 gigabytes), followed by NSW (286.38 gigabytes), ACT (283.56 gigabytes), South Australia (283.09 gigabytes), Western Australia (282.71 gigabytes) and Tasmania (276.12 gigabytes).

Gaming and movies were the most popular media.

The position of the Northern Territory may confuse readers, given its small population, as telecommunications analyst Paul Put put forward some reasons.

“What comes to my mind is that there are very few things that people outside of the big cities can attend,” he said.

“In Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, there are cinemas and restaurants on every corner. When you come out of these metro areas, you see people who do not have these services.”

Mr Pude said many in the region would use the home Internet for educational and medical appointments.

A Telstra spokesman said fewer homes in the northern region, compared to other jurisdictions, may have been affected as a result.

The most populous states have the highest number of homes with low internet usage, which affects the average.

The high number of homes for security personnel in the Northern Territory may require a quick internet for their work, which may also be a factor.

Telstra also identified suburbs that had downloaded the most data.

Topping the list is Williams Landing, a suburb of Melbourne.

The recently developed area has a large number of units, with the average household downloading 567.70 gigabytes per year.

Next are Sydney and Newcastle suburbs Edmundson Park and Shortland, respectively, Huntfield Heights in Adelaide and Oakley South in Melbourne.

This is a common reason for the increasing demand for Call of Duty by gamers who download updates for the first person shooter game.

The data was compiled from January 1 to mid-December, and includes Telstra home broadband services.
