A virus is currently wreaking havoc on Android smartphones. The tricky thing about malware is that it disguises itself as a simple computer update. Read here how to detect malware and protect your Android smartphone.
Gimberium security experts have found dangerous malware FoundIt threatens important data such as photos, WhatsApp messages, SMS, call logs or the browser history of Android users. This software disguises itself as Google’s official computer update, but is actually a Trojan horse that can be used by attackers to remotely access user data and files.
To deceive users, the malware even uses the official Google logo and system update name, which is why it can be easily confused with Google’s actual push announcement. The software then sends only small data packets to be noticeable. However, these contain important data mentioned later so that they end up in the wrong hands.
Android Malware: Anyone installing apps outside the Google Play Store is at risk
Malware is installed exclusively from third-party sources such as unofficial websites. If you only install your apps from the Google Play Store, you should be on the safe side.
On the other hand, those who occasionally install software from other sources should be careful. It should be noted that the malware notifies Android users through a grass notification that the system is currently looking for updates. No such announcements will ever come from Google, only an announcement will be displayed that an update is available and ready to install.
Additionally, a push message appears regarding the alleged system update, indicating that the update should be completed by installing additional applications. This also applies here: Google will never display such commands on your mobile phone.
Good security software: Important on smartphone as well
In early 2016, more mobile than standard traffic was measured for the first time – a trend that continues to this day and will increase in the coming years. But as more and more mobile devices become consumer-centric, cybercriminals are more likely to develop fraudulent software because the potential target group is growing every day.
In addition to Google Play security it is now important to equip not only your computer but also your smartphone with good security software. Sophos Mobile Security for Android, Avira Antivirus 2020 Or WeSecure antivirus is free, you can download it for free from CHIP.
