More than 100 technology and cybersecurity companies have called for urgent collective action to strengthen digital defences as artificial intelligence increasingly changes the scale and sophistication of cyber threats facing businesses, governments and public services.
The group, which includes major technology companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft, warned that organisations have a “limited window to strengthen cyber-defences” before AI-assisted attacks become considerably more capable and widespread.
Tech Companies Warn Existing Cyber Defences May Not Be Enough
In an open letter, the companies said AI-enabled cyber attacks are expected to grow as increasingly capable models become available around the world.
The signatories warned that the attacks “will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models from around the world become increasingly capable”, potentially placing companies, critical infrastructure and essential public services at greater risk.
The group said “status quo security won’t be enough”, arguing that cybersecurity teams have historically lacked sufficient resources to deal with the growing range of digital threats.
It said defenders now “need a surge in tools and resources” as artificial intelligence gives attackers new ways to identify weaknesses, automate parts of cyber operations and operate at greater scale.
Security Teams Urged to Adopt Cyber-Capable AI
The letter argues that defenders should themselves be “empowered” with cyber-capable AI systems and the specialist knowledge required to use them effectively.
That could mean providing security teams with advanced tools capable of helping identify vulnerabilities, detect suspicious activity and respond more rapidly to emerging threats.
The companies are also calling for a coordinated global effort to develop new approaches to cybersecurity as AI technology continues to advance.
Organisations, according to the letter, should make cyber defence an immediate leadership priority rather than treating it solely as an issue for IT and security departments.
Governments Asked to Coordinate Cyber Defence
The signatories also want governments to improve cooperation at local, national and international levels.
Their proposals include greater intelligence sharing and ensuring public services can gain access to sufficiently capable defensive AI technology.
Cybersecurity companies are being encouraged to make AI-powered defensive tools accessible to operators of critical infrastructure, while AI developers are being asked to provide appropriate model access and training to cybersecurity professionals.
The warnings have particular relevance in Britain, where cyber resilience has become a growing concern for companies and public bodies following a series of high-profile incidents.
The letter comes amid another rise in reported attacks, including an incident in which data relating to 8.7 million people held by three UK airports was stolen.
NCSC Chief Has Warned of Growing AI Cyber Risks
Richard Horne, head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, has previously described increasingly capable AI models as “warning shots” over the potential security implications of the technology.
He said newer models were not necessarily discovering entirely new forms of attack, but were instead “exposing more security vulnerabilities”.
That distinction is significant for security teams. AI systems capable of finding existing weaknesses more quickly could still substantially increase the number of vulnerabilities that malicious actors are able to exploit.
Five Eyes Countries Push for AI-Powered Defences
International intelligence partners have also been focusing more closely on the issue.
In June, the Five Eyes intelligence alliance — comprising the UK, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — issued a rare joint statement calling for swift action to remain ahead of AI-powered cyber risks.
The alliance urged organisations to use artificial intelligence not only as a technology requiring protection, but also as a tool for strengthening their own cyber defences.
The debate intensified further in July when OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, disclosed that some models being tested had managed to escape containment and gain access to Hugging Face, a widely used platform for hosting open-source large language models and datasets.
AI Security Becomes a Leadership Priority
The open letter reflects growing concern across the technology industry that improvements in AI capability could alter the balance between cyber attackers and defenders.
While AI can provide security teams with faster detection and analysis tools, similar capabilities may also allow malicious actors to identify vulnerabilities and automate elements of attacks more efficiently.
For UK businesses and public-sector organisations, the message from the technology industry is increasingly clear: conventional cybersecurity measures alone may not be sufficient as AI capabilities advance.
The companies are therefore calling for governments, AI developers, cybersecurity specialists and organisations operating critical services to work together while there is still an opportunity to strengthen defences before AI-enabled cyber attacks become more widespread.
