    Ancient Supervolcano Discovered Beneath England’s East Coast

    Scientists have identified the remains of an enormous ancient supervolcano buried deep beneath England’s east coast, revealing a previously hidden chapter in Britain’s geological history. Centred beneath The Wash and extending into Norfolk and Lincolnshire, the volcanic system erupted around 454 million years ago with a force thousands of times greater than that associated with Mount Etna.

    Supervolcano Beneath The Wash Spanned at Least 65km

    The ancient volcano measured at least 65km (40 miles) across and is believed to have produced one of the largest eruptions in Earth’s history.

    Researchers at the British Geological Survey (BGS) say the eruption could explain an extensive layer of volcanic ash found across parts of northern and eastern Europe, including Norway, Sweden, the Baltic region, Belarus and Poland.

    Dr Tim Pharaoh of the BGS, principal author of the research outlining the discovery, described the findings as a “fantastic result”, changing “our understanding of England’s deep geological past”.

    The term supervolcano is generally applied to volcanic systems capable of producing eruptions involving more than 1,000 cubic kilometres (240 cubic miles) of material.

    Around 20 supervolcano systems are recognised around the world today, including Yellowstone in the United States and Toba in Indonesia.

    Eruption Happened Long Before the Dinosaurs

    The Wash supervolcano was active about 454 million years ago — roughly 200 million years before dinosaurs appeared.

    Scientists believe its enormous eruption sent hundreds of cubic kilometres of material from the Earth’s crust high into the atmosphere. An eruption of comparable magnitude in the modern world could have devastating global consequences.

    Despite the dramatic discovery beneath eastern England, researchers stress there is no possibility of the ancient volcano suddenly returning to life.

    “Unlike faults, which can be seismically reactivated, a volcano can’t,” Pharaoh said.

    “Once it’s gone extinct, that’s it. Nobody needs to worry about the supervolcano erupting again.”

    80-Year-Old Rock Samples Helped Solve Geological Mystery

    There are no obvious signs at ground level of the enormous volcanic system beneath the relatively flat landscapes surrounding The Wash.

    The breakthrough came after scientists re-examined rock samples collected about 80 years ago from boreholes hundreds of metres deep at North Creake in Norfolk and Claxby, near Horncastle in Lincolnshire.

    The samples had been preserved in BGS archives at Keyworth, Nottinghamshire.

    During the Covid lockdown, researchers began revisiting existing geological samples using modern analytical equipment and techniques that were unavailable when the rocks were originally collected.

    Tiny Zircon Crystals Revealed Volcano’s Age

    Scientists focused on microscopic zircon crystals, some roughly the width of a human hair. These highly durable minerals can form in molten magma before volcanic eruptions and provide researchers with a precise geological clock.

    Analysis showed that samples from Norfolk and Lincolnshire formed at approximately the same time — about 454.4 million years ago — and originated from the same volcanic system.

    The results also matched the age of material studied by researchers at the University of Oslo.

    That connection suggests ash from the enormous eruption travelled across a vast distance to what is now Scandinavia, where it eventually settled on the ancient sea floor. Layers associated with the volcanic event can still be identified in Norway’s geological landscape.

    Discovery Explains Long-Standing Anomaly Beneath Eastern England

    Pharaoh said there had previously been no direct surface evidence pointing to a supervolcano beneath The Wash.

    However, earlier research by scientists at the University of East Anglia had detected a geophysical anomaly beneath the region. Researchers concluded that the area was underlain by relatively light rocks, most likely granite.

    Pharaoh said advances in scientific equipment and dating techniques had finally allowed researchers to connect those earlier observations with the newly analysed samples.

    “It’s only now that we’ve got these precise ages we can make these bold statements and assertions,” he said.

    “It’s extremely satisfying to come up with this very precise result.”

    Findings Could Improve Understanding of Britain’s Subsurface

    Prof Jenni Barclay, a volcanologist at the University of Bristol, said the findings represented an important development in reconstructing Britain’s geological history.

    “This work is an important step forward in piecing together the geological history of the UK, and understanding that subsurface is important for lots of reasons linked to our sustainable use of resources, like water and minerals,” she said.

    The discovery demonstrates how modern technology can extract new information from geological material collected decades ago. For researchers, the vast extinct volcano beneath Norfolk, Lincolnshire and The Wash provides new evidence of the extraordinary geological forces that shaped the land that would eventually become Britain.

    Although its eruption was powerful enough to spread ash across large areas of Europe, its 454-million-year age means the newly identified supervolcano presents no volcanic threat today.
