We know about virtual reality helmets and glasses, here are augmented reality lenses. American start-up Mojo Vision proves it through a tech-rich lens.
American start-up Mojo Vision is working on a lens that integrates multiple technologies. Thanks to that, you can enjoy superimposed content, images and texts in the real environment around you.
After many promises, the first prototype of the Mojo Lens is finally in action. Drew Perkins, CEO of the start-up company, was able to experience this: “The future is already here. I saw it. I carried it. He is working.“In this case, he served as the guinea pig for the first activation of this new smart contact lens technology, which provides access to practical and contextual information.
It took more than six years of work and development to achieve this working prototype. The difficulty was to miniaturize all on-board electronics, creating completely new components and an adapted user interface. Today, it is not science fiction.
0.5 mm diameter microlet screen
At the heart of the lens is a 0.5mm diameter microlet display! The passing light makes it possible to accurately distinguish the image that returns to the screen. It embeds a processor, responsible for image processing, an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer. Finally, the lens has micro-batteries that provide power. The entire interface is controlled only by eye movements, without resorting to hand gestures for example.
The goal is now to evaluate Mojo Lens’ capabilities through multi-phase trials and clinical studies, and to provide feedback on the software and applications. It remains to discover the real applications of this lens as it is fully developed.
This type of lens, for example, can radically change the lives of visually impaired people. But they can allow an athlete or cyclist to focus on their activity while still having access to a variety of programs displayed in their field of vision.
