The lite version of YouTube, designed for emerging markets and low-cost phones, will be discontinued in August. Google thinks standard usage is enough.
Did you know that on Android smartphones, there is a free version of YouTube with the functions reserved for the paid version of YouTube Premium? Launched in 2016, YouTube Go was initially targeted at emerging markets such as India. This lighter version of YouTube, which takes up less space on smartphones and is the main feature that allows you to download YouTube videos locally, generally reduces connectivity issues. It is quite possible to use it in Europe to download videos for free, but many are unaware of it.
In a blog post published on May 3, Google has announced the closure of the company.
The end of the Go strategy?
YouTube Go is the most restricted version of YouTube. Forget the ability to post comments, settings or content, the app plays (or downloads) videos. Google seems to be tired of it, and now its users are being asked to switch to the full app, where they can find additional features. However, on YouTube, Google Newsletter forgets that downloading videos requires a subscription.
In August, YouTube Go will stop working. With this ruling, one wonders what will happen to other light versions of popular Google software such as Google Go, Google Maps Go, Google Assistant Go or Gmail Go. The company also offers Android Co, a “lite” version of its operating system for low-performance smartphones.
In the end, the fate of these applications seems to be sealed. Devices are getting bigger, networks are getting better, and Go software is becoming more distributable.
