Sun protection extended to space telescope

Washington The largest and most expensive space telescope of all time has been in space for almost two weeks. “James Webb” took months to implement – but now important stages have been reached.

On the other hand, the secondary glass system was used on Wednesday. It reflects light from the main glass and is essential for the telescope to work properly. This completes some of the most complex procedures in setting up a telescope.
This is an “incredible milestone” that will be crucial to the success of the mission, Web Director Gregory Robinson said Tuesday at a NASA headquarters in Washington opening solar protection. He talked about the “wonder of technology”. The telescope, developed jointly by space agencies in Europe, the United States and Canada, is designed to explore the oldest galaxies in space.
During the eight-day deployment of the shield, thousands of parts had to work together precisely, Robinson said. According to NASA, the armored device will protect the telescope from the light and heat of the sun, earth and moon and will operate at temperatures below minus 229 degrees.
So it has five layers. Each layer is as thin as human hair and coated with reflective metal. The resulting protection is equivalent to a million sun protection factors.
The telescope was launched on December 25 by an Ariane missile from the European space station Guerrero in French Guiana. The web team started using sun protection three days later. Like everything else the maneuvers were controlled from the ground, the telescope unmanned. According to NASA, it will take about five and a half months for the commissioning process to be fully completed.
The telescope will fly 1.5 million kilometers in the sky and is expected to cover this distance in four weeks. Scientists believe the images provide information about the post-Big Bang period of about 13.8 billion years ago. The first data and images from the telescope are not expected until the summer.
According to the operator, the James Webb telescope was built about 30 years ago and cost about $ 10 billion (8. 8.8 billion). It follows the “Hubble” telescope in use for over 30 years.
