OnePlus Butts Pro offers three modes for active noise reduction, the function of which is not very intuitive to integrate: each has its strengths and weaknesses, which are not really imagined by reading the title of each mode.
Headphones are set to “adaptive” mode by default … and this gives them less confidence than everyone else. Most confusingly, its efforts seem to focus on higher frequencies, with only slightly better results than simple passive isolation of headphones. The “noise reduction” method is not interested in comparing with the “maximum noise reduction” mode, which is greater than or equal to the full listening spectrum.
So let’s focus on the latter, which is certainly sensitive and appreciative of the reduction of external noise, but far from achieving the manufacturer’s promises. While the latter proudly announces a drop of up to 40 dB, we should really be satisfied with 20 dB – enough to silence the roar of an engine or the rolling of a train, but not create a real silence bubble for the user.
What’s more, the algorithms used by the headphones reject the noise towards the triplet enormously – which is why, in measurement, the active noise reduction curves range significantly from 1 kHz to the passive isolation curve. As a result, non-standard sounds such as human speech are more clearly perceptible. So don’t expect Butts Pro’s noise reduction to help you improve your concentration in quiet open space; It will be of no use to you in this situation.
