Washington (AFPThe Mars rover “diligently” began drilling into the surface of the red planet. “Sample started!” NASA employee Thomas Surbuchen said Friday. The U.S. space agency NASA has released footage showing a small mountain with a hole in the middle next to the rover.
The well is the first step in a sample process, which is expected to take about eleven days. Its purpose is to search for signs of ancient microbial life preserved in ancient lake debris. Scientists hope to better understand the geological conditions of Mars.
“Perseverance” left Florida a year ago and landed in the Jessero abyss on Mars in February. Scientists suspect that there was a deep lake there about 3.5 billion years ago, which emptied several times over time and refilled, providing conditions suitable for organic life.
However, it took scientists several years to analyze the models: NASA, along with the European Space Agency (ESA), has no plans to collect the samples and bring them to Earth until 2030.
