Apple’s April event compiled several findings in less than an hour, and questions about some details remained unanswered. For example, the company introduced a new iMac with a 24-inch display that comes with a matching Magic keyboard. A special feature of the keyboard is the Touch ID field, which users can use to sign in using their fingerprint. This feature has been around for a long time on MacBooks. During the event, the question arose as to whether the new Magic keyboard would match the old Max.
Touch ID can only be used with the M1 Max
The new iMac’s Magic keyboard is not yet available for purchase separately, but prospective buyers of the computer should at least be interested in whether it can use its keyboard with other Macs. It is primarily about the function of the fingerprint sensor. According to reports, Touch ID is compatible with all M1 Macs. In addition to the 24-inch iMac, it also includes the Mac Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (13 inches). Accordingly, the fingerprint sensor works in conjunction with all other ARM Macs.
However, there are restrictions on the Max with the Intel processor. Older computers only integrated the 24-inch iMac’s Magic keyboard with a standard Bluetooth keyboard. Touch ID is not supported. According to previous knowledge, the fingerprint sensor does not work with the D2 chip on the Intel Max. This also applies to other Apple products such as the iPad. If you want to use the Touch ID field of the new Magic Keyboard, you need the M1 Mac.
Imac basic model without Touch ID keyboard
The standard keyboard with the new 24-inch iMac depends on the model you choose. The entry-level version comes with a basic configuration of Magic Keyboard without Touch ID for 1449 euros. The fingerprint sensor is integrated only from the middle model to the standard. Additionally, a larger version of the Magic Keyboard with a numeric keyboard is available for an additional fee.
