Moscow views the novelny case as an “excuse” to intervene: sanctions – US policy “should not play with fire”

The Kremlin warned Washington not to “play with fire” after US sanctions were imposed on representatives of the Russian leadership. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Tuesday evening accusing the United States of “anti-Russian aggression.”

There is no “logic and sense” in US policy, which would “further damage” bilateral relations, the statement said. Washington justifies sanctions by Russian leadership against Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

The list of US sanctions released on Tuesday includes the head of Russia’s Secret Service, the FSP, Alexander Portnikov and close allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is the first time the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia since the inauguration of new President Joe Biden.

Python’s government has been tougher on dealing with Moscow than any previous government under President Donald Trump. The European Union (EU) on Monday announced sanctions against Navalny and four other members of the Russian government for their alleged involvement in the crackdown.

The Russian Foreign Ministry declared that “absurdities prevail.” Navalny’s case is used only as an “excuse” to openly interfere in Russia’s “internal affairs.”

The ministry announced that Russia would act “on the basis of mutual policy”. Attempts to impose something on Russia with the help of sanctions or pressure have already been done in the past. (AFP)
