Alexei Navalny, a Kremlin critic imprisoned in Russia, was brought to the Vladimir region, about 200 kilometers from Moscow.

“He will initially be in isolation and then his sentence will be transferred to the colony,” Alexei Melnikov told Russian news agency Interfax on Sunday from the Commission in charge of Prisoners’ Rights. According to media reports, about 800 people are serving their sentences in the small town of Pokro, and conditions are lower than in other camps.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s best critic has been sentenced to more than two and a half years in prison for violating his probationary conditions.

The decision was strongly condemned internationally and provoked mass protests in Russia. On Friday, Alexander Kalashnikov, head of Russian prisons, announced that the opposition member had been transferred without providing further details.

Navalny was admitted to hospital in Germany after a poisoning attack in August, for which he blamed the Kremlin. He was arrested shortly after returning to Russia in January. The 44-year-old is considered the most important enemy of the Russian president. Opposition activists have been arrested several times and given short sentences. His supporters have criticized the judicial action against him as politically motivated. (AFP)
