Dallas (Abby) – School officials announced Saturday that star freshman Die Jordan, who was returning to the University of Utah to grow up in the Dallas area, has died.
Authorities in Texas and Utah have not released details of the circumstances surrounding Jordan’s death. The day before, Jordan was named Pack-12 is the newcomer of the year.
“Words cannot express the devastation and mental anguish our team now feels after learning of the tragic death of our teammate and brother Die Jordan,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement.
Jordan, the fastest 5-foot-7, 200-pound player, emerged from a crowded Utah background and became the focal point of the team’s offense. He ran 597 yards and finished the season with 11 catches and six touchdowns for 126 yards.
Jordan came as a volleyball player playing in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, and he is a very popular guy. He made a seamless change to the college game, including three straight 100-yard quick shows to close the season.
Utah was one of nearly two dozen major college football teams that turned down the opportunity to play in the post-season cup game, instead allowing players who had been under strict COVID-19 protocol for months to begin their seasons.
