Residents are urged to download the new NHS app, which launched today, Thursday, to help control the spread of coronavirus.
The app is launched after positive tests and rigorous testing and is designed to be an important tool for working alongside contact tracing.
It is available to 16-year-olds and forms a central part of the NHS Test and Trace Service, which aims to identify contacts who have tested positive for coronavirus.
If you are in close contact with a certified case, it will allow you to check the symptoms, book a free test if necessary and get your test results.
The UK’s leading mobile network operators have confirmed that not all application activities will be excluded from the customer data allowance.
The app’s contact tracing element works by using low-power Bluetooth to log in to other app users’ time and distance between you, so it’s alerting you if anyone close to you later tests compatible with COVID. 19.
The government says it was designed with consumer privacy in mind, so it tracks the virus and not the public and uses the latest in data security technology to protect privacy.
The application does not contain personal information such as your name, address or date of birth and only the first half of your postcode is required to ensure that it can handle local outreach.
Health and Social Welfare Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We are at a critical juncture in our efforts to control the spread of this virus.
“As infection rates rise, we must use every tool we have to prevent transmissions, including the latest technology.
“We have worked extensively with tech companies, international partners and privacy and medical professionals – and have learned from trials – to develop an application that is safe, easy to use and helps keep our country safe.
“Today’s experiment marks a significant step forward in our fight against this invisible killer and I urge everyone who can download and use the app to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
As of today, businesses are legally required to display an official NHS QR code poster before launching the COVID-19 application.
By scanning the QR code poster while visiting the venues using their smartphone, residents can quickly and easily check the venue.
For persons who have not checked-in using the QR poster the customer contact details will have to be collected through the platform and this will be a legal requirement.
