Nintendo hosted its annual event Briefing on Corporate Management Policy Although the conference on September 16th was largely devoted to the company’s corporate philosophy and its ongoing plans for the expansion of its IP, Nintendo shared some interesting tips during the briefing, including the latest milestones for Nintendo accounts and Switch online subscribers.
According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, more than 200 million Nintendo accounts have now been created worldwide. “We have worked hard to extend our IP beyond the dedicated video game platform business to reach customers who do not have any of our gaming systems. As a result the creation of a Nintendo account for users has increased significantly, especially thanks to the release of the Mario Cart Tour mobile application,” Furukawa said.
Furukawa noted that the number of Nintendo clients “is steadily increasing along with the growing install base of the Nintendo Switch”. Accounts continue to be an integral part of Nintendo’s plans. “In the future, the Nintendo Account program will continue to provide an important foundation for distributing our products and IP,” Furukawa said.
Nintendo Switch Online, the company’s paid online service for the switch, now has more than 26 million subscribers – returning from 15 million subscribers in May this year. “Along with hardware sales, membership has grown at a steady pace, with the implications of hit games supporting online play,” Furukawa said. The most important recent example is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which re-launched in March and was a celestial success, selling over 22 million copies by June.
Another part of Nintendo Switch Online is its NES and SNES libraries, which Nintendo periodically expands with additional games. Another batch is coming this week on September 23rd and includes Donkey Kong Country 2, Mario’s Super Picross and more. Switch online subscribers will be able to download and play Super Mario Brothers 35, the combat royal-style version of the NES Classic from October 1.
