Diego Maradona signs a shirt to help a poor neighborhood in Buenos Aires
“We will get through,” wrote the football legend on the shirt in an optimistic message to a country struggling to stop the spread of Covid-19. Argentina is also facing serious economic difficulties as it struggles with the repayment of its debt. The jersey is drawn to raise funds for a popular district of Buenos Aires.

The raffle will be reserved for those who have already donated as part of an initiative that has collected hygiene products, masks and about 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of food for charity.

“Diego cannot even imagine what he did for us, it is priceless. I will be grateful to him until the day I die,” said Marta Gutierrez, a local resident.

Maradona spent her formative years in Buenos Aires, playing for Argentinos Juniors and her beloved Boca Juniors before being transferred to Barcelona in 1982 for a world record.

The peak of his career came at the 1986 World Cup, where his individual talent elevated Argentina to the ultimate price in world football, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final.

Maradona is the latest football legend to contribute to charitable efforts during the pandemic, along with current global superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both make major donations to hospitals.
