Following Nintendo’s recent announcement that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became the fastest-selling game in the franchise’s history with 459,000 copies on launch day in the US, new reports confirm that the game has now sold over a million copies worldwide.
This great news wipes all doubts that the game would sell poorly based on the sole fact that it’s “only” an upgraded version of Mario Kart 8. Nintendo’s bet on MK8 Deluxe was the right one: players who never owned a Wii U but got in with a Switch most probably picked up the game, and within those who did play the original one, some want to experience the handheld way-of-play and the new “Deluxe” features.
Back when the original Mario Kart 8 was released on Wii U, more than 1.2 million copies were sold worldwide in just four days. And at the date of December 31st 2016, cumulated sales are at 8.26 million copies worldwide. Knowing that the Nintendo Switch will clearly sell more than the Wii U, we’re curious to see how Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sells in the months to come.
It’s also interesting to note that the Nintendo Switch has now two million-sellers in its games catalogue, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe & The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. For a system that just passed its first two months on shelves, it’s quite impressive. Next up, ARMS or Splatoon 2?
