Yacht Club Games’ next project won’t be a Shovel Knight game

The indie developer has the idea of expanding to a new franchise

With Shovel Knight Treasure Trove and Specter of Torment released in the first days of the Switch, the American indie developer studio Yacht Club Games confirms its ties with Nintendo. But what now? What’s the next surprise they’ll unveil? Many of us are expecting a Shovel Knight 2 down the road, ideally with Switch exclusive features. And we already know that the guys at Yacht Club already have ideas on expanding the Shovel Knight universe to full 3D, or even with IRL projects. But apparently that’s not all.

In an interview with magazine NextN, Sean Velasco (Designer and Director) talked about what the studio is planning in the future. First, they kinda eject the idea of a Shovel Knight 2. Instead, they want to expand their vision and development to a totally new project, very different from what they’ve done so far but still with the Yacht Club Games signature. Looks like our shovely hero will stay a little longer by that fire.

Q: After doing the King Knight DLC campaign, are there any possibilities of seeing Shovel Knight 2?

A: Yes, but it would also be really amazing to work on something fresh and new. For now, start thinking about what the next 8 knights could be like!

Q: Some time ago, Yatch Club Games confirmed that, in 2017, you would work on a completely new project. Can you give us a little preview of what we could expect from it? Will it be completely different from Shovel Knight?

A: It will probably be something that is very different than Shovel Knight, but still retains our distinctive Yacht Club Flavor. Nintendo made Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, but they are all distinctly Nintendo. I’d love to make another franchise that people love even more than Shovel Knight!
