Pokemon GO Water Festival kicks off with a shiny surprise!
Put your flippers on, the Water Festival has started
Niantic Labs updated Pokémon GO to launch the Water Festival! Running until March 29th, this special event kicks off during the “World Water Day”, created by the UN to bring attention to the worldwide clean water crisis. The game oddly doesn’t mention much about it. So, what is this Pokemon GO festival all about? Here’s the list of things you’ll get during the Water Festival:
Make a splash in Pokémon GO!
- Increased chance to encounter water type Pokémon: Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, Gyarados, Wartortle, Blastoise, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Lapras (even though it’s mainly an Ice Pokémon).
- Water type Pokémon from Generation 2 (Johto Region) will appear if you walk near water sources in real life: Chinchou, Lanturn, Marill, Azumarill, Politoed, Wooper, Quagsire, Sloking, Qwilfish, Corosola, Remoraid, Octillery, Mantine, Kingdra. No special mention of Suicune but it’s still a Water type so maybe a chance to see it.
- You can buy a special Magikarp hat with Pokécoins.
What’s that shiny thing in the water?
This is just in. Niantic say anything about this in the announcement of the Pokémon GO Water Festival, but players report having encountered Shiny Magikarp since yesterday! It’s the first shiny ever in the game, and we feel a little intention of trolling with the fact that it’s a Magikarp. But the good thing with this Pokémon is that it can evolve in a Shiny red Gyarados. Now we’re talking!
So, how to encounter it? Just as always, it goes with luck. But be careful, you’ll see it on your map as a regular Magikarp. It will only unveil as a Shiny when you’re in battle. No other Shiny Pokémon has been spotted so far. The Water Festival runs until 1 pm PDT on Wednesday 29th March and we don’t know yet if the Shiny Magikarp will stick around after that. So chop chop, get movin’!
[UPDATE]The PokémonGO official YouTube account just shared a video to introduce the Shiny Magikarp. Here it is!
Trainers across the globe have reported sightings of golden Magikarp in the wild. These Shiny Magikarp are extremely rare, so pay close attention to the Magikarp you encounter while you’re out exploring the world to make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to catch one! Have you caught one? Make sure to share your story and a screenshot with us on Twitter using #PokemonGO.
